Garcia-Lopez inking practice by TeamSmithy Garcia-Lopez inking practice by TeamSmithy
Manga Studio inking practice from the José Luis Garcia-Lopez pencils here: [link]

I find the same things difficult to ink in Manga Studio that I would if I were using a real brush.

Jonah Hex as Santa Claus... that's nearly as incongruous as one can get, and I can't tell if it's awesome despite that or awesome *because of* that!

I guess the children that get those toys will be part of the some he's a hero to...

I keep thinking he's going to get to that little house and just shoot them.

I doubt it; they wouldn't have crossed or challenged him and there wouldn't be any bounty on their heads.

It could be that he came across some bushwhackers and killed them, and their dying victim begged him to take the toys to the children.

Really nice. You've retained a sense of personality in the image, particularly in the toys, which Nowlan's cold-edged inks have somewhat lost. Ultimately where he's reined the artwork in, you've let it hang loose a bit, and it works a treat. The thick, wavy lines give it a bit of an antique feel, which I think is appropriate given the subject matter.

Thanks, keeping it loose was only partly a stylistic choice because of the program but I'm glad you thought it fitting.

It's fun to draw ultra detailed stuff every now and again. I like the idea of a cowboy Santa. Is this from an old folk tale or something like that?

It's a José Luis Garcia-Lopez penciled piece I inked. Someone at DC looked through their character to see which would be best on a Christmas Card and chose Jonah Hex, which is kinda awesome actually.

Oh, no kidding! I remember seeing him in an episode of the old Batman cartoon. I had no idea he had his own serials!

Cool! :D

it's funny how the balance of tone shifts from the pencil version to the inked version, on both yours and his. On the pencils the horse & rider pop and look like one unit a lot more, whereas inked the horse and rider look more they're made of individual parts. Then when it's coloured it all falls back into place again for me. It's not really a criticism, just an observation! :D

but yeah, I dig it, good stuff :D

Thanks.

Yeah, there's a lot of detail on Jonah that's on the horse to break up the blacks. You could probably past it by adding more texture to the shadows on the horse, maybe.
